Indiana Real Estate License Requirements

Reciprocity: 

Real estate commissions and boards across the country are adopting policies for a real estate agents in one state to more easily become licensed in another state. Indiana has a reciprocal relationship with Illinois. 


Continuing Education (CE) and License Renewal Requirements: 

Real estate professionals in Indiana must renew their real estate licenses every three years by June 30. Real estate CE classes, however, must be completed every year by June 30. To renew an Indiana real estate broker license, 12 hours of elective continuing education classes are required each year, between July 1 and June 30 of the following year.

The information provided below can be found on the Board’s website. However, we recommend you contact the Board for more detailed information and for any changes which may have occurred. 


Licensure Levels

Licensure Requirements to Become an Appraiser 

• Must be at least 18 years of age 

• Must have a high school diploma or its equivalent 

• Have not been convicted of any crimes of dishonesty or moral turpitude 

• Must meet the educational requirement for the applying level of appraiser licensure • Must meet the experience requirement for the applying level of appraiser licensure 

• For Certified Residential level: A minimum of an Associate’s Degree OR 21 college semester hours in specific subject matters is also required 

• For Certified General level: A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree OR 30 college semester hours in specific subject matters is also required 

• Satisfactory completion of the state examination 

• Submit application, required documents (including criminal background check), and associated fees 


Appraiser School Education Requirements 

• 90 hours for the Trainee Appraiser which consist of the following appraiser courses: Basic Appraisal Principles (30 hours), Basic Appraisal Procedures (30 hours), 15 Hour National USPAP Course or its equivalent (15 hours), 15 hours of electives from Board approved courses

Experience Requirements for Becoming an Appraiser 

• Trainee Appraiser – No experience requirement 

• Certified Residential Real Property Appraiser – 2500 hours in not less than 24 months • Certified General Real Property Appraiser – 3000 hours in not less than 30 months with at least 2000 hours of experience in nonresidential appraisals 


Continuing Education Requirements for Appraiser License Renewal 

• Appraisers are required to complete 28 hours of continuing education appraiser classes each renewal cycle. The renewal cycle begins July 1 of even-numbered years and ends June 30 of the next even-numbered year. 

• If you are licensed during first year of the 2-year renewal cycle you are required to complete 14 hours of continuing education. If you are licensed in the second year of the 2-year renewal cycle you are not required to complete continuing education for that renewal cycle 

• Effective September 27, 2013 the Indiana Real Estate Appraiser Licensure & Certification Board requires that each licensee/certificate holder take USPAP no later than 6 months after the effective date of the newest version.

Iowa Real Estate License Requirements

Hours required for real estate broker license in the state of Iowa: 72 hours 


Reciprocity:

Be a resident of AR, GA, LA, MA, MN, MS, ND, or WV 

Received their original license from that state

Iowa Real Estate Appraisal Licensing Requirements

The information contained below is designed to provide a summary of the minimum education, experience, and examination requirements established by the Iowa Board of Real Estate Appraisers. The information provided below can be found on the Board’s website. However, we recommend you contact the Board for more detailed information and for any changes which may have occurred. 


Licensure Levels 

• Associate Appraiser 

• Certified Residential Appraiser 

• Certified General Appraiser 


Licensure Requirements to Become an Appraiser 

• Must be at least 18 years of age 

• Must have a high school diploma or its equivalent 

• Must meet the educational requirement for the applying level of appraiser licensure • Must meet the experience requirement for the applying level of appraiser licensure • For Certified Residential level: A minimum of an Associate’s Degree OR 21 college semester hours in specific subject matters is also required 

• For Certified General level: A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree OR 30 college semester hours in specific subject matters is also required 

• Satisfactory completion of the state examination (no exam requirement for the Associate Appraiser) 

• Submit application, required documents, and associated fees 


Appraiser School Education Requirements 

• 75 hours for the Associate Appraiser which consist of the following appraiser courses: Basic Appraisal Principles (30 hours), Basic Appraisal Procedures (30 hours), 15 Hour National USPAP Course or its equivalent (15 hours) 

• 200 Hours for the Certified Residential Appraiser which consist of the same 90 hours of Associate Appraiser education AND: Residential Market Analysis and Highest and Best Use (15 hours), Residential Appraiser Site Valuation and Cost Approach (15 hours), Residential Report Writing and Case Studies (15 Hours), Residential Sales Comparison and Income Approach (30 hours) Statistics, Modeling and Finance (15 hours), Advanced Residential Application and Case Studies (15 hours), Appraisal Subject Matter Electives (20 hours)

Experience Requirements for Becoming an Appraiser 

• Associate Appraiser – No experience requirement 

• Certified Residential Appraiser – 2500 hours in not less than 30 months 

• Certified General Appraiser – 3000 hours in not less than 30 months with at least 1500 hours of experience in non-residential appraisals 


Continuing Education Requirements for Appraiser License Renewal 

• Appraisers are required to complete 28 hours of continuing education appraiser classes each renewal cycle 

• Licensees renew every two years by July 30th 

• The 7-hour USPAP Update course or its equivalent must be taken every other year
