North Carolina Real Estate License Requirements

Licensing Board/Commission: 

North Carolina Real Estate Commission

 

Requirements: 

Education hours required for a real estate salesperson license in the state of North Carolina: N/A 


Education hours required for a real estate broker license in the state of North Carolina: 75 hours 


Reciprocity: 

Real estate commissions and boards across the country are adopting policies for a real estate agents in one state to more easily become licensed in another state. In North Carolina, an applicant who holds a current salesperson or broker real estate license in another state (or US territory or Canadian jurisdiction) that has been on active status within the previous three years may qualify to waive the 75- hour North Carolina broker prelicense course, as well as the national section of the North Carolina real estate license exam. The applicant must first pass the State section of the examination and demonstrate satisfactory moral character. 


Continuing Education (CE) and License Renewal Requirements: 

Real estate professionals in North Carolina must renew their real estate licenses every year by June 10. By this date, licensees must complete 8 hours of real estate CE classes, including the 4-hour update course provided by the Real Estate Commission (REC).

North Carolina Real Estate Appraisal Licensing Requirements 

Learn about the appraisal education needs for licensing and renewal in North Carolina. 


The information contained below is designed to provide a summary of the minimum education, experience, and examination requirements established by the North Carolina Board of Real Estate Appraisers. The information provided below can be found on the Board’s website. However, we recommend you contact the Board for more detailed information and for any changes which may have occurred. 


Licensure Levels 

• Registered Trainee 

• Certified Residential Appraiser 

• Certified General Appraiser 


Licensure Requirements to Become an Appraiser 

• Must be at least 18 years of age 

• Must have a high school diploma or its equivalent 

• Possess good character 

• Must meet the educational requirement for the applying level of appraiser licensure 

• Must meet the experience requirement for the applying level of appraiser licensure 

• For Certified Residential level: A minimum of an Associate’s Degree OR 21 college semester hours in specific subject matters is also required 

• For Certified General level: A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree OR 30 college semester hours in specific subject matters is also required 

• Satisfactory completion of the state examination (Registered Trainees are not required to take a state exam) 

• Submit application, required documents, and associated fees 


Appraiser School Education Requirements 

• 90 hours for the Registered Trainee which consist of the following appraiser courses: Basic Appraisal Principles (30 hours), Basic Appraisal Procedures (30 hours), 15 Hour National USPAP Course or its equivalent (15 hours), Residential Market Analysis and Highest and Best Use (15 hours) OR General Market Analysis & Highest & Best Use (30 Hours) 

• 200 Hours for the Certified Residential Appraiser which consist of the same 90 hours of Registered Trainee education AND: Residential Appraiser Site Valuation and Cost Approach (15 Hours), Residential Sales Comparison and Income Approaches (30 Hours), Residential Report Writing and Case Studies (15 Hours), Statistics, Modeling and Finance (15 Hours), Advanced Residential Applications and Case Studies (15 Hours), Appraisal Subject Matter Electives 20 Hours (May include hours over minimum shown above in other modules) 

• 300 hours for the Certified General Appraiser which includes the same 200 hours for the Certified Residential Appraiser education AND: Income Property Appraisal (60 hours), General Appraiser Report Writing and Case Studies (10 hours), General Appraiser Market Analysis and Highest and Best Use (15 hours) 


Experience Requirements for Becoming an Appraiser 

• Registered Trainee – No experience required 

• Certified Residential Appraiser – 2500 hours in no less than 24 months 

• Certified General Appraiser – - 3000 hours in no less than 30 months 

• NOTE: NC Point System Requirement is: 300 points in either the residential or general category, 50% must be 1-4 unit single family residential property where the sales comparison approach was used; for the General Certification - 360 points with at least 180 points in the general category 


Continuing Education Requirements for Appraiser License Renewal

• There are two CE cycles and appraisers are required to take 28 hours every 2 years 

• Seven of the 28 hours must be the 7-Hour National USPAP Update course, as required by the Appraiser Qualifications Board of the Appraisal Foundation, or its equivalent. USPAP is revised every even numbered year, and appraisers must take the even numbered year edition of the 7- Hour National USPAP Update course by June 1st even numbered year in order to renew in an even numbered year 

• The remaining 21 hours of continuing education appraiser classes must be completed by June 1st of every odd numbered year

North Dakota Real Estate License Requirements

Requirements: 

Education hours required for a real estate salesperson license in the state of North Dakota: 45 hours 

Education hours required for a real estate broker license in the state of North Dakota: an additional 60 hours 

North Dakota also requires 15 hours of postlicense educataion. 


Reciprocity: 

Real estate commissions and boards across the country are adopting policies for a real estate agents in one state to more easily become licensed in another state. The North Dakota Real Estate Commission has entered into reciprocity with Georgia, Iowa and Minnesota. 


Continuing Education (CE) Renewal Requirements: 

In order renew a real estate license in North Dakota, real estate professionals must complete 9 hours of real estate CE courses every year by December

North Dakota Real Estate Appraisal Licensing Requirements 

Learn about the appraisal education needs for licensing and renewal in North Dakota. 


The information contained below is designed to provide a summary of the minimum education, experience, and examination requirements established by the North Dakota Board of Real Estate Appraisers. The information provided below can be found on the Board’s website. However, we recommend you contact the Board for more detailed information and for any changes which may have occurred. 

Licensure Levels 

• Apprentice Appraiser 

• Licensed Appraiser 

• Certified Residential Appraiser

• Certified General Appraiser 


Licensure Requirements to Become an Appraiser 

• Must be at least 18 years of age 

• Must have a high school diploma or its equivalent 

• Must meet the educational requirement for the applying level of appraiser licensure 

• Must meet the experience requirement for the applying level of appraiser licensure 

• For Certified Residential level: A minimum of an Associate’s Degree OR 21 college semester hours in specific subject matters is also required 

• For Certified General level: A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree OR 30 college semester hours in specific subject matters is also required 

• Satisfactory completion of the state examination (Apprentices are not required to take a state exam) 

• Submit application, required documents, and associated fees 


Appraiser School Education Requirements 

• 75 hours for the Apprentice Appraiser which consist of the following appraiser courses: Basic Appraisal Principles (30 hours), Basic Appraisal Procedures (30 hours), 15 Hour National USPAP Course or its equivalent (15 hours), 

• 150 hours for the Licensed Appraiser which include the same hour requirement as the Apprentice Appraiser level AND: Residential Market Analysis and Highest and Best Use (15 hours), Residential Appraiser Site Valuation and Cost Approach (15 hours), Residential Report Writing and Case Studies (15 Hours), Residential Sales Comparison and Income Approach (30 hours) 

• 200 Hours for the Certified Residential Appraiser which consist of the same 150 hours of Licensed Appraiser education AND: Statistics, Modeling and Finance (15 hours), Advanced Residential Application and Case Studies (15 hours), Appraisal Subject Matter Electives (20 hours) 

• 300 hours for the Certified General Appraiser which includes the same 200 hours for the Certified Residential Appraiser education AND: Income Property Appraisal (60 hours), General Appraiser Report Writing and Case Studies (10 hours), General Appraiser Market Analysis and Highest and Best Use (15 hours) 


Experience Requirements for Becoming an Appraiser 

• Apprentice Appraiser – No experience required 

• Licensed Appraiser - 2000 hours in no less than 12 months 

• Certified Residential Appraiser – 2500 hours in no less than 24 months 

• Certified General Appraiser – - 3000 hours in no less than 30 months with at least 1500 hours of experience in non-residential appraisals 


Continuing Education Requirements for Appraiser License Renewal 

• The North Dakota Appraisal Board has transitioned to a 28 hour/2 year renewal cycle. Licensees are now divided into 2 groups (see below). Each group is required to obtain 28 hours of continuing education including the 7 hour National USPAP Update (or Equivalent) course. 1.) Those that renewed on 12/31/12 have an expiration date of 12/31/14 and will continue to expire on even years. 2.) Those that renewed on 12/31/11 now have an expiration date of 12/31/13 and will continue to expire on odd years 

• Appraisers must complete 28 hours of continuing education appraiser classes every two years 

• 7 hours must include the USPAP Update course or its equivalent
